"If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions. If you can determine what a man thinks, you do not have to worry about what he will do. If you can make a man believe that he is inferior, you don’t have to compel him to seek an inferior status, he will do so without being told, and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t need to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own, and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one."
— Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950)

Your contributions allow:
  • Funding provided for all ABEN schools to send two (2) representatives* to the annual ABEN Professional Development Institute. ABEN’s Institute facilitates academic and cultural excellence through training on culturally courageous leadership and culturally and linguistically responsive instruction.

  • Professional training in grant writing.

  • Information sharing, problem solving, capacity building and technical assistance through electronic conferences via use of innovative technology.

  • Participation in helping to refine ABEN’s conceptualization of academic and cultural excellence, in establishing benchmark targets and indicators that will determine ABEN schools’ degree of success, and receiving/providing direct assistance to other ABEN schools, as feasible.

  • Field trips to exemplary schools serving a critical mass of Black students that demonstrate academic and culturally courageous leadership, and culturally as well as linguistically responsive instruction.

  • Every school’s link will be on the ABEN website and features about the school will be on a rotation schedule. Mini-grants provided for enrichment activities. Participation in ABEN for three years before reapplication will be required.

Note: ABEN schools will have the option to send additional representatives to the annual Professional Development Institute at their expense.

At ABEN, we seek to work with partners who are committed to moving toward the provision of African-centered education — to the degree possible within any given environment.
