Learning True History to Affect the Future

Cultural Imperative Program | Tony Browder Scholars

Picture
Renowned cultural historian, professor and author, Tony Browder, guides Black high school students on a journey to learn the true history of the African diaspora in the United States and abroad. He explains the origin of all humans from the continent of Africa and educates students on how to use this knowledge to influence their life paths. The first Cultural Imperative Initiative (CII) was developed in 2014 by Debra Watkins (Founder and Executive Director of A Black Education Network) and Tony Browder (Founder and Executive Director of IKG). Over the course of four years, Mr. Browder met with students at three different high schools in San Jose, CA and facilitated 50 min. sessions once a month during the school year.

The sessions were designed to help students increase cultural awareness and critical thinking skills. In 2018, Ms. Watkins partnered with Mr. Browder to expand CII and successfully piloted the Cultural Imperative Program (CIP) as Saturday Academies in four sites (Dayton, OH; Los Angeles, CA; Fresno, CA; and Hayward, CA).

Due to the profound impact the Saturday Academies had on the students, their parents and their site coordinators, we decided to extend the opportunity to African American communities throughout the U.S. The Cultural Imperative Program was officially launched in January 2019 and included a total of 10 sites around the country, impacting more than 300 students, families and site coordinators.

For the 2020 season, there were 7 sites around the country before the pandemic hit in March. Some sites pivoted to a virtual model and some suspended the program.

All sites for the 2021 season have been selected. Check back here in April 2021 when the application process re-opens for the 2022 season.
